Pattaya Nightlife and Entertainment
Pattaya is possibly best known for its Entertainment and Nightlife. There are a lots of go-go bars, night clubs, beer bars, gay venues, and discos. The cabaret revues featuring ladyboys are also very renowned. Although there are Nightspots over most of Pattaya the area known as Walking Street is the central area for all the night activities.
Pattaya is famous for its beer bars sometimes also called bar-beer. These small bars are staffed by ‘bar girls’ who are ‘for hire’. Beer bas usually offer one or more pool tables, connect-four and shut-the-box games. It's virtually impossible to count how many beer bars there are here but roughly estimated, there must be something between 1,000 and 2,000 bars scattered all over town.
Outdoor Bars can be found all over Pattaya, with the biggest and best known concentrations being along and around Soi 7 / Soi 8 and Walking Street, at numerous spots on Beach Road , Second Road, Soi Buakhao, and just about everywhere else, including along the southern end of Naklua Road and at Jomtien. Although the staff of a typical beer bar will usually be prostitutes, customers who have no intention of paying a "bar fine" (money paid to the bar so that the girl can leave with the customer) are generally very welcome and indeed make up the majority of the clientele.
Indoor beer bars can also be found all over Pattaya, the most notorious areas being Soi Yodsak (Soi 6) and parts of Soi Post Office (Soi 13/2). While some of these bars are much more "bar fine" oriented, in most cases customers who simply want to buy drinks are still welcome. The official closing time in "entertainment zones" is 01:00 (in practice usually somewhere between 01:00 and 02:00, depending on the location) and 00:00 elsewhere - however "closing" is defined as switching off the music and non-essential lighting, and numerous beer bars remain open 24/7. Many of the bars are opening from around midday onwards and serving beers (during happy hours especially) for around the 45 to 60 baht.
A Beer Bar is never far away in Pattaya so there is no reason to feel lonely.
Live songs especially popular rock oldies - can be heard at several open-air venues along Walking Street, and at various bars elsewhere. Thai cover bands abound. Some are very good, most are average and some are just dreadful. The majority work behind beer bars but unfortunately have to compete with other bands in nearby beer bars as well as piped music of varying quality.
Pattaya has two types of discos - those that are on or near Walking Street, and those that are not. Those on Walking Street are more popular with Westerners and with bar girls looking for customers. The ones further away from Walking Street are generally more typical Thai discotheques: no special area for dancing, but lots of shows and great atmosphere.
Club Insomnia - Nightclub on Walking Street, World-renowned DJs mixing up a "hectic-electric blend of beats and basslines" (from club music, trance and house music, to mainstream pop) hot Thai girls and a great party atmosphere have made Club Insomnia one of the most favourite party spots and pick-up joints.
Lucifer DiskoTK - Theme decorated, "dance club" on Walking Street and one of the hottest spots in Pattaya, with plenty of freelance ladies on the prowl. The music is generally mainstream American Hip Hop, Gangsta rap and R&B, with live music on the weekends. Lucifer is notorious for double-tier pricing and charging foreign revellers double the price for their drinks. But given the fancy cave-like interior design and the entertainment you get, it's definitely still worth a visit.
Marine Disco - Marine Disco, located in the very heart of Walking Street, has been in business for decades and become an institution in Pattaya's nightlife. Due to the many freelance prostitutes - often on their second shift of the night after having been bar-fined in their regular venues and taken for a "short time" already - Marine has gained an infamous reputation not only as a discotheque but rather as an after-hour pick-up joint.
MIXX Nightlife Disco – A relative newcomer at Bali Hai Plaza, 3rd floor (at the Bali Hai Pier at the southern end of Walking Street)
Promoted as "Pattaya’s first upscale disco," MIXX Nightlife actually combines two discos in one. If you’re into House music or Trance, then you’ll enjoy the Crystal Palace with its modern, funky atmosphere and state-of-the-art technology. If your taste in music runs more towards R&B or Hip Hop, Rouge Club is the place for you. MIXX opens nightly from 9pm till late, with the "best international and Thai DJs and very beautiful dancers."
Star Dice - Located at the Pattaya Garden Resort on Naklua Road, North Pattaya, Star Dice Entertainment is a large traditional Thai-style discotheque featuring live music and show entertainment. You are welcome to bring your own bottle of whisky and order only the mixers and ice cubes. No double- tier pricing as in the pick-up joints on Walking Street, but no freelance hookers either. Popular with locals and tourists alike.
Tony's Disco - Enttertainment complex with live music and dance show entertainment at the southern end of Walking Street. 2 separate Discos and similar concept as Marine Disco and used to be one of Walking Street's favourite meeting point for freelance "ladies of the night", but now very quiet.
Do you fancy the sight of half-naked sexy Thai girls show-dance right in front of your eyes? Then a visit to one of Pattaya's famous Gogo bars should definitely be on your to-do list when staying in Pattaya, regardless of whether you're a single male or an adventurous couple.
Pattaya is synonymous with nightlife, and go-go bars blazed the trail for all that followed suit. These enclosed bars, in which scantily clad girls strut, shuffle and sway seductively around steel poles, are the reason many come to Pattaya. The rules are easy to grasp: Entry is free, photography forbidden, music loud, booze flowing, girls available. Nudity is illegal in Thailand, but here in Pattaya's gogo land rules are made to be broken. Prices for drinks average around 120 baht for a beer or shot and mixer, with drinks for your half-naked host coming in at slightly more.
Most Gogo bars have Happy hours in the early evening hours - with draft beer being sold at as cheap as 50 Baht or less - which isn't just good value for money but may be cheaper than drinking in some beer bars.
Currently, there are more than 70 A-Gogo bars all over Pattaya, most of which can be found on Walking Street and its side-streets.
Gogo bars are air-conditioned indoor bars with dancing stages in the centre and lots of attractive women with only little clothes or bikinis on who perform the erotic art of pole-dancing. Many bars also provide some kind of show entertainment - with profane objects such as balloons, bananas, cigarettes ("pussy smoke cigarette") or simply two affectionate girls involved (lesbian show).
Table-dancing on mirrored tables has become increasingly popular in the past years. The reason for these mirrors, of course, is that the ladies wear only very little clothes under their short skirts and to make sure that heavily intoxicated punters, who prefer to stare down at the table anyway, do not miss any intimate physical details between the thighs of the sexy dancers. Other Gogo bars provide their show dancers even with Jacuzzi bathtubs to make sure their most intimate parts meet international hygiene standards ...
While Gogo bars are concentrated most densely in the South Pattaya area (Walking Street, Pattayaland Soi 2) lightly-dressed show girls, shaking their little booties on the dancing stage, can be found all over Pattaya - with a number of chrome-pole palaces on Pattaya Beach Road, Soi 6, 7 and 8, Soi LK Metro, Soi Post Office, or even in Jomtien or Naklua.
Another famous feature of Pattaya's nightlife are Thailand's unique katoeys, that is, ladyboys. Often more attractive than the 'real thing', Pattaya's she-males are famous for their sexy looks and their potential to offer you a sexual experience of a "different" and slightly sleazier kind. While many ladyboys work as freelance prostitutes on Walking Street and Pattaya Beach Road, there's also a rising number of bars and pick-up joints specifically designated to katoeys. Alcazar and Tiffany cabaret theatres feature professional transvestite cabaret shows - performed by female impersonation artists.
See the best of Pattaya through its colourful performing arts scene. The cabaret shows here have garnered world-wide fame, thanks to their stunning ladyboy entertainers who possess tremendous stage talents. For a concentrated dose of Thai culture and history, the extravagant Alangkarn Show will take your through two hours of captivating performances.
Alcazar cabaret - t’s been said that if you want to see beautiful ladyboys, go to Tiffany; but if you want to see a great show, head over to Alcazar. Pattaya has made good of its long-time love affair with ladyboys. Extravagant costumes, convincingly stunning ladyboys, spectacular stage sets are all part of a grander show that delights you with non-stop fantasmic entertainment, from the Russian stage to K-Pop to Persian harlem and even outer space. Whether you are in for the beautiful ‘ladies’ or the show, you’ll get your money worth at Alcazar.
Alngkarn Cabaret- oldly declaring itself “The Extravaganza Show”, Alangkarn is a cultural theatre, a circus, a musical and a world-class stage production all in one. It touches on all facets of Thai history, culture and traditions in the 2-hour stretch that proves to be both entertaining and spectacular. Lavish stage sets and colourful costomes are a given, but expect to see lots of special light and sound effects, from multi-colour laser shows to stunning pyrotechnics, aerial acrobatics, dancing and great storytelling. And according to the “been there, done that” crowd, the show definitely lives up to its name.
Tiffany Show- Everyone loves a great tale of adventure and romance. But this is nothing like watching “Moulin Rouge” on Blu-Ray or even at an IMAX 3D Theatre. Match dazzling stage sets with blindingly shiny costumes and stunning ladyboys, and you have a show so mind-blowing that it completely shatters the ‘fourth wall’.GAY BARS
As the rest of Thailand, Pattaya is extremely gay-friendly and has a fairly developed gay scene, including gay bars, Gogo bars and show bars with attractive young male dancers, transvestite cabaret theatres, gay massage parlours and other gay-friendly establishments.
Albeit less developed than its straight bar scene, Pattaya's gay bar scene is similarly organized. There are both regular beer bars where you can have a drink and chat with the male staff, as well as Gogo bars, which feature erotic dance and show performances. The only difference to straight bars is that the service staff, the hosts and dancers are young and attractive local males instead of females . The two most popular gay areas in South Pattaya are Sunee Plaza/Soi Day-Night (off South Pattaya Road) and the world-famous Boyz Town where an abundance of gay bars, gogo bars, massage parlours, gay-friendly restaurants and related establishments are located.
Boyz town Gay-only bars and go-go joints are centred around the aptly named Boyz Town (Soi Pattayaland 1 & 3 and Soi 13/4). Highlights along these busy, noisy, neon-lit streets include The Copa (Pattayaland Soi 3). In addition to being a conventional go-go bar, it offers one-of-a-kind erotic underwater show in which well-toned guys glide and dive gracefully through the water in very tight pants. After that there's a storming cabaret show. Boyz Boyz Boyz, a gay club and party house, has hot go-go guys and cabaret shows every night from 21:00. Sunee Plaza is just off the strip, quieter and more private.
Sunee Plaza, on the other hand, has gained a reputation for younger boys, some well below the minimum age of 18; so to avoid legal consequences, be careful and ask the boy to show you his ID card before engaging in more intimate activities. Underage prostitution is strictly prohibited by Thai law!
Jomtien has also developed its own popular gay scene. While Dongtan Beach is Pattaya's main gay beach, Jomtien Complex (off Thappraya Road) features a couple of gay bars and nightclubs, some of which also feature show entertainment.
